I am also thinking specifically about affordances allowed for minority type consumers and of those consumers with disabilities. How would the learning curve for the iPhone compare to other mobile devices by low-use of technology individuals. How would a blind person, for instance, use a touch-screen interface such as the iPhone.

[...] The basic problem Tog describes is that while the App Store currently has over 85,000 applications, an iPhone/iPod Touch (I’m just gonna write iPhone from now on, okay?) can only provide access to 180 at a time. Granted, that’s plenty for most people, but it is a real limit for a device that more and more people are beginning to rely on for more and more things. Tog says, “Paradoxically, this would not be a bad upper limit on a Mac or PC, as apps tend to equal trouble and the more you have, the more trouble you’ll encounter. On the iPhone/iPod Touch, however, 180 apps is terribly limiting as iPhone/iPod Touch apps translate to fun, not trouble, and the more apps you have, the more fun you can have.“ And isn’t fun the reason for the iPhone’s success?
This is a brilliant article, althought I think the conclusion you raise from your observations is too narrow : Fun is not (only) the new usable. As a UX professional, I strongly believe that intention — authorship — is actually the new usable.

Behind the wonders and flaws of the iPhone, one can clearly read the mental universe of its architect, Steve Jobs.

You can draw the parallel with a movie, a book or a building. For these works of art to achieve greatness, they have to go beyond great execution : they have to be supported by a very rich mental universe, the one of its director, author or architect.

So, IMHO, looking into game theory is a very insightful avenue, but it's far from actually providing a "method" to build more usable devices or apps.

Solutions come from the depth of an author's mind, and his/her ability to tune in other people's mind at a given moment. To me, this is where the excitement of being a UX architect takes its source.
