I'm not a coder at all, so this is my favorite way of making prototypes. I call these "Slap 'n Map" prototypes - as in "slap an image in an HTML page, and image-map it." It's fast, realistic enough to get decent test results from and something I can do myself without any help, so it's worked really well for me throughout the years. Thanks for sharing it with the community.

Belen, Colin & Elizabeth,
You make some great points about prototyping and user testing. The information gained from these steps of development are too good to pass up. However, one point I think should be stressed is that it is not just about finding cheap techniques for prototyping, but about making sure you do some sort of prototyping and user testing, period.

You and/or your client will end up spending more money or be left with an unusable end product if you do not go through these stages. It might be through extensive rework at the end of development, a complete redesign, late delivery, poor usability (and therefore reduced sales), or even an abandonment of the project all together.

Even if it may not seem like user testing and prototyping is in the client's budget, it is important to discuss with them that they cannot afford to go without these steps.

Thanks for the share!

Andrea

We're huge fans of prototyping! I believe one of the best examples demonstrating the benefits of prototyping (and design-by-community) is Mark Boulton's redesign of drupal.org - http://drupal.markboultondesign.com

Hello, if you are using Visio for prototyping you may want to check VisDynamica addon (www.visdynamica.com). It allows to create real forms (even with full validation!) and dynamic interactions quickly in Visio. Btw, we use the methods you describe all the time in our design projects (at www.k2.pl).
