Awesome Article Bill, thanks a lot! I think the most important thing before testing anything is thinking about what results you want to get (quantitative vs. qualitative) and how the results would influence further (design)-decisions. Draw a line in the sand BEFORE testing anything and compare the results with your assumptions.

One sidenote: We are currently looking for BETA-Testers for our own Remote Usability Service Userbrain – http://userbrain.simplease.at - in case you're interested drop me a line.

I'd like to mention one other remote testing tool which might be of use to some of your readers - kupima (http://kupima.com). This is a fairly new site so wasn't around when this article was written, but it's useful in that it combines video user testing with the ability to collect both textual and discrete question answers, and automatically generates PDF summary reports with graphs. So it fits somewhere between things like usertesting.com and Loop11 in its approach.

What are the best alternatives to Loop11?...

UserZoom. I'm sorry, but Usertesting.com is not comparable to Loop11. It's a great tool, but a whole different method. See more info at http://johnnyholland.org/2010/08/25/how-to-shop-for-unmoderated-usability-testing-tools/...

Great article. The only comment I'd add to it is that, while we at UserZoom don't consider ourselves as full-service, we DO provide a lot of support services from experienced researchers, so our customers can make the most out of our software. We actually think this is a MUST as in many occasions conducting these type of studies can be fairly complicated.

Thanks Bill for your article! ;)
