The Atlantic Coast Conference is one of 15 member institutions of the NCAA’s Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), and it includes teams from the most prominent states on the East Coast of the United States. The ACC consists of 15 institutions located in eastern and coastal states including North Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, East Carolina, Clemson, Duke, Pittsburgh, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Miami, NC State, Wake Forest, Syracuse, and the Maryland, Florida State, and Florida univiersities. The conference is a member of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and has won 11 National Championships and been the runner-up in another 5 bowl games. When Did the ACC Begin / Brief History Breakdown?
The ACC expanded into the Southern U.S., and in 1978 the league added Miami University and the University of Georgia. This was followed by the 1984 addition of the University of Virginia (who is currently the only Atlantic Coast Conference team to have never left the conference when the Big East changed from a conference with 10 teams to a conference with 13 teams). The 1992 expansion brought in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, however the school left in 2013 after the ACC dropped football.
The ACC underwent another expansion in recent years, adding the University of Notre Dame as a member in 2014. The ACC’s members’ location is no longer limited to the Atlantic region, in fact, the ACC is now the second-largest conference in terms of geographic footprint, second only to the Pac-12.
