NFL Quarterbacks with the Biggest Hands

NFL Quarterbacks with the Biggest Hands

Benefits of large hands for Quarterbacks

Drew Brees and Brett Favre, both Quarterbacks in the NFL, have demonstrated that hand size may be more important than height. Favre played well in adverse weather conditions due to his large hands.

You can hold the ball better and throw it more easily with bigger hands. Passers must be able control the ball at all times. They must be able to control the football in all situations. All of these things are possible with big hands.

The NFL Combine measures the size of your hand by measuring the tip tip of your thumb and the tip tip of your pinky finger, with the hand extended.

How is the NFL measuring hand size?

The NFL Combine measures the size of your hand by measuring from the tip tip of your thumb to the tip the pinky finger, with the hand extended. This is the player’s hand span or spread.

Even an NFL player can have a handspan of 11 inches and more. The Combine’s record for largest hand measurement is 11.75 inches. It was set by DeForest Buckner and Gosder Cherilus. Average male handspan is 8.5 inches.

The NFL does not measure hand length. This is a different way to measure hand size. It measures from the base of your palm to the tip or middle finger. At their Combine, the NBA measures both hand length and span.

LeBron James, for example, had his hands measured at nine inches. Average hand length for males is 7.4 inches. People often confuse hand span with hand length. A person’s span is almost always larger than their length.

How coaches value hand size

Today’s NFL teams prefer that their quarterbacks have a hand span of at least 9.5 inches. They are also very cautious about picking a quarterback who has a shorter handspan.

Hue Jackson, Browns coach, is very particular about the size of his quarterbacks’ hands. He has stated that he prefers those who have handspans 10 inches or greater.

Chip Kelly, former coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, suggested that quarterbacks don’t thrive simply because they are tall. He said that they do so because they have big hands.

Kelly’s argument might have some truth. Quarterbacks throw through the passing lanes and not above their linemen regardless of their height. This article will examine some of the NFL’s most remarkable hand sizes.
